with people who will unbore 2016

Winter 2014-2015 is the first edition of WINTERVIEWs.
A collection of short interviews with people that unbore our Lives.

This week: Photographer Michael james O'Brien, who's work has been published in VOGUE, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and many others. Unboring our lives with his new expo 'Diptychs'

What are the first 3 websites you visit every day?

BBC News, Poets.org, Spitalfields Life

If you could go back 3 years in time, what would you do?

Wouldn't change a thing , no regrets.

Nothing can convince me to believe that …

Communication via instagram and Facebook is an improvement over real time contact. I am switching to carrier pigeon for my private correspondence.

The most guilty pleasure I have is …

The most guilty pleasure I am willing to share is an obsession with Spy & Espionage  literature & film, fact or fiction, from Sherlock Holmes (especially with Benedict Cumberbatch!) to John LeCarre.

Everybody wastes time. What is your favorite waste of time?

I know wasting time is recommended as a respite from the oversaturated, overly informed world we live in but, I don't have the hang of it.

Reading these questions, I am actually thinking of ….

The future...

Very good ideas are often found in…

Very bad places

I think in 2015, the 'thing' of the year will be …

If there is a "thing" we should invest in it asap. Meanwhile, let it be Peace, increased understanding, hope and equality for absolutely everyone.

Every creative should know and remember this:

"..you are the music, while the music Lasts   " -T.S.Eliot, The Dry Salvages

Would you rather find the cure for cancer or all the missing people in the world?

Cancer Cure.

Thanks Michael

Week 4: A talented designer duo. The founders of the Antwerp fashion label O'rèn Official, Michael Wauman and Nathan Murillois.

What are the first 3 websites you visit every day?

- Social Media ( FB, Instagram, ..)

- Personal mail / Work mail

- www.o-ren.be – Admin / Webshop

If you could go back 3 years in time, what would you do?

Absolutely nothing! All the decisions we’ve made in the past has led us to where we stand today.

Starting in the Fashion academy, working our way up as Fashion stylists and taking a chance in starting our own ready-to-wear label, it has been a pretty wild ride, but we can proudly say we have grown a lot, and are more than pleased to see the whole evolution. The sky is the limit.

Nothing can convince me to believe that …

Things don’t just happen for a reason, your future has all been marked for you.

Appreciate all the little things in life, be kind, work hard, keep going, stick with the plan and always stay true to yourself!

The most guilty pleasure I have is …

Being greedy, we live in a society where we can have it all, and we want it all, the bigger the better.

It good to be ambitious, but it’s even more important to stay humble, not get caught up in the moment and appreciate everything you managed to achieve so far.

Everybody wastes time. What is your favorite waste of time?

Probably going to the movies.

Reading these questions, I am actually thinking of ….

The next collection!

Very good ideas are often found in…

Moments of silence.

I think in 2015, the 'thing' of the year will be …

2014 has been a very interesting and rewarding year, let’s hope 2015 will lift “O’Rèn Official” to the next level.

Every creative should know and remember this:

Always follow your instinct.

Would you rather find the cure for cancer or all the missing people in the world? And Why?

This is definitely the most difficult question! We are people that always wish the best for everyone, choosing one of these two options would be impossible for us. Let’s say that, in a better world, we hope that eventually a cure will be found and no more people will have to be missed.

Thanks Michael and Nathan.

Week 3: Real life PETER GRIFFIN, who will be unboring 2015 with his genius cosplay act.

What are the first 3 websites you visit every day?

Facebook.com, youtube.com, ebay.com.

If you could go back 3 years in time, what would you do?

Time travelling huh? I would change my grad school major.

Nothing can convince me to believe that …

There is no good left in the world.

The most guilty pleasure I have is …

Scaring my co-workers.

Everybody wastes time. What is your favorite waste of time?

Playing video games.

Reading these questions, I am actually thinking of ….

How overwhelmed I am about the speed my video has spread.

Very good ideas are often found in…

The shower.

I think in 2015, the 'thing' of the year will be …

Cosplaying to bring happiness.

Every creative should know and remember this:

Everything happens for a reason and hard work pays off.

Would you rather find the cure for cancer or all the missing people in the world? And Why?

Cure cancer because maybe not every lost person wants to be found.

Thanks Real Life Peter Griffin.

Week 2: Lectrr, who's cartoons will unbore newspapers and magazines in 2015.

What are the first 3 websites you visit every day?

parkablogs.com
It keeps me posted on recent art books. As an artist it is important to be on the verge of what is happening right now, and parka keeps me in tune.

cartoonbrew.com
For the same reason I also try to be in on things when it comes to animation, because I just love good animation

standaard.be
My job as a cartoonist requires me to read the news thoroughly, so I start reading in the early morning, and I keep visiting this (and some other international newspaper sites as well) all day long until my deadline in the evening, looking for angles for my daily cartoon.

If you could go back 3 years in time, what would you do?

Looking back you can only see mistakes, so I try only to look forward and avoid them. There's nothing I would do different because I wouldn't have learned from those mistakes then.

Nothing can convince me to believe that …

We'll all read books and newspapers digitally one day.

The most guilty pleasure I have is …

Nutella. It's so good, one would expect it'd be banned by now. And I know it's not healthy, but still...

Everybody wastes time. What is your favorite waste of time?

Hanging around in bookshops, between bookshelves, enjoying the smell of books or the smalltalk people have about literature. I practically grew up in a library so books are my habitat.

Reading these questions, I am actually thinking of ….

Mmm…Nutellaaaaarghghgh…. (sound of Homer thinking of donuts)

Very good ideas are often found in…

The company of bad ones. Don't be afraid of bad ideas. My best ideas are bad ideas that were nurtured carefully, left to ripe. Never avoid an idea or downsize an idea. Every idea has it's worth, and can be turned into a great idea with lots of work.
There's no such thing as instant inspiration, there's only blood, sweat and tears. Those lead to very good ideas.

I think in 2015, the 'thing' of the year will be …

The big exit from social media. People are growing tired of Facebook and will return to real friendship and actual likes that mean something.

Every creative should know and remember this: ….

People that say you should think outside the box are narrow-minded idiots. There is no box.

Would you rather find the cure for cancer or all the missing people in the world? And Why?

If I'd find the cure for cancer, it'd probably lose it again as well, as I'm really sloppy. Same goes with all the missing people in the world, they'd get lost again if I found them.

I'd be glad not to get lost myself in 2015 (no sense of orientation whatsoever) or get cancer because of all the Nutella I eat. It's a good place to start.

But if I had to choose, I'd choose the cure for cancer: there will always be new people to get lost, but once you have the cure nobody new would get that terrible decease. Unless someone like me would lose the cure. I'm terrible.

Thanks Lectrr
